The shortest route without going all the way to Chania is to take the bus from Heraklion to Vrysses (check the schedule before you go: not all buses stop in Vrysses, some bypass it) and change for the Chania-Chora Sfakion bus there. The ferry ride from Chora Sfakion to Agia Roumeli takes one hour.
From Chania to Agi Roumeli
Getting to Agia Roumeli from Chania is a simple process. To begin, you must reach Chora Sfakion via car or bus. KTEL is the bus company that offers a direct route from Chania. Once you're in Chora Sfakion, you can take the ferry mentioned previously, which lasts approximately one hour.

You will not believe the adventure we had in Agia Roumeli! We hiked through the Samaria Gorge and then stayed in Agia Roumeli for one night.
We had planned to go home the next day, but the wind had other plans! As our ferry trip was cancelled due to stormy weather, we were forced to extend our stay in this charming village. This, of course, was no problem for us or our hotel host, who was delighted to have an unexpected extra night in the low season.
We finally caught the ferry the next day and made it to our next stop, but we learned that sometimes things don't go as planned. And you know what? It was totally worth it for the unexpected fun we had in Agia Roumeli!
