What to expect at Katholiko beach

Katholiko beach is a remote and secluded destination, so visitors should not expect many facilities on the beach. There are no umbrellas, sun loungers or any kind of beach equipment available for rent. Also, there are no restrooms or showers on the beach.

It's important to come prepared with everything you need for a few hours of hiking, such as sunscreen,  a hat, and appropriate clothing and footwear. It's also a good idea to bring snacks and water, as there are no food vendors on the trail.

To reach the rocky beach, visitors can take a scenic hike that starts at the Monastery of Gouverneto, descending 260 meters from the parking lot to the bay.

1. The starting point of the hike

Katholiko beach is located on the west side of Crete in Greece, about 30 minutes by car from the city centre of Chania.  

The road is well-paved and offers scenic views of the surrounding hills. You will see signs for the Gouverneto Monastery and the Agia Triada Tzagaroli Monastery along the way. Once you reach the Agia Triada Monastery, you will be just 4 km away from the Gouverneto Monastery parking lot, which is the starting point of the hiking trail.

To get there by taxi from Chania town costs approximately 20 to 30 euros.

2. The amazing hike to Katholiko Monastery

Hiking to Katholiko Monastery in Crete is an amazing adventure! The hike starts at the Gouverneto Monastery parking lot which is located at the top of a rocky hill.

As you pass through the gate of the stone fence, you'll find yourself in a beautiful garden. There is a small entrance fee of 2 euros per person, and please note that only cash is accepted. As you walk through the garden, you'll pass the main entrance of the monastery and reach a wooden door. Once you open it, you'll be greeted by a breathtaking panorama. From here, a rocky footpath leads the way down.

When you leave the Gouverneto Monastery and start your hike down to Katholiko bay, the first stop on the rocky path is the Arkoudiotissa Cave. The cave is located on the cliffs above the bay and offers a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape.

As you approach Katholiko Monastery, you'll have to descend a few steep steps to reach it. Katholiko Monastery is one of the most remarkable monasteries in the Chania area. The ruined buildings and the surrounding area are completely deserted, as the Monastery is no longer inhabited by monks.

Gouverneto Monastery

After admiring the incredible Monastery that is partially carved into the rock, you'll descend into the gorge that leads to the beautiful Katholiko Bay. As you walk down the trail you will notice that the gorge is steep and rocky.

It's important to note that the hike down to the bay can be challenging and requires good physical condition, so if you're not up for it, you can still enjoy the Monastery and the beautiful surrounding nature without going down to the bay.

If you decide to continue your journey down to the bay, you'll pass through an exceptional gorge that offers stunning views. The gorge is a narrow and steep-sided valley that was carved by water over time. The walls of the gorge are towering, making it an impressive sight.

The way down there to Katholiko beach can be quite challenging, and in windy weather, it can be even more difficult.
