History of Loutro

Loutro is a village with a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years. In ancient times, there was a port called Phoenix here. Archaeologists found some old bathhouses in the area and that's why they named Loutro this small fishing village which means bath in Greek. You can still see the ruins of these bathhouses today, just a short walk southwest of the village centre.

During the Middle Ages, pirates used to hide in Loutro's bay because it was surrounded by high mountains which made this place a perfect strategic location. The pirates were finally driven out by the Venetians who built small fortresses to protect the area. At the end of Venetian rule, the region fell to the Ottoman empire. Their rule ended only in the early nineteenth century. Loutro's fortress and watchtowers can still be seen on the western hillsides, where you can walk up to them.
